Beacon Rock is one of my most favorite places. At least twice a year I hike to the top of this monolith that stands over 800 ft above the Washington shore of the Columbia River.
These are some of the 54 switchbacks on the Beacon Rock trail.
Since 2008 until 2016 I went to Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre in Moshi, Tanzania for a few weeks each year to help teach neurology. A safari with my friend Dr. William Howlett was a regular treat during these trips, usually to Tarangire National Park for a weekend. We would always take our first drive through the park before sunrise as the animals are particularly active at dawn. This giraffe was dining on an acacia as the sun was just starting to rise.

This is looking south from the boat dock at the base of Beacon Rock late on a fall afternoon. The mountains in the distance are on the other side of the Columbia River in Oregon.
This is looking east at sunrise from the from the same location at the base of Beacon Rock.
